Fearing The Unknown

I am a planner.  Plain as that.  I want to know what's going to happen, when it's going to happen, and what is going to happen after it happens.  This year is a year of unknowns and I'm freaking out.

For as long as I've been alive I've always known what's next.  After third grade, I knew I had to switch schools.  After fifth grade, I knew I was going to the big middle school.  After eighth grade came the frightening high school.  Even though I didn't know what would happen in college I knew that I was going to Auburn after I graduated high school.  I came to Auburn knowing exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up.  After a year of struggling in classes that dream went away and new plans came into play very quickly (because not knowing scares the crap out of me).  After switching degrees, I began planning my future immediately to figure out where I would work and what I would be.

After two years of planning what I would be after graduation, I have no idea what those plans are and honestly  I don't think I ever knew what I wanted to do.  Graduation is less than 4 months away and I have no idea where I will be living, working, or doing with my life.  I guess this is suppose to be fun for some people but my personality doesn't care for this unknown at all.

I have no idea how to plan what will happen after May 6th because it isn't in my control.  The best thing I can do is hope that what I think I want to be and where I want to be will eventually fall into the "plan".

Small Town Girl with Big City Dreams

I have lived in Anniston/Oxford, AL for my entire life.  When I first came to Auburn I told everyone I was from Anniston because if I said Oxford everyone stared at me like I had three heads.  Small town USA is how I always referred to my hometown.

Everyone says to remember where you came from.  Know where your roots grow.  I love the adults in my hometown.  They helped me grow into the young lady I am becoming, they pushed me through hard times, and I never had to worry about my safety or well being when adults were around.  But when it came to high school aged people my worries were always high.  I was never secure after seventh grade.  I didn't believe in myself, I questioned everything, I wanted attention, but did not know how to make friends.  Is it bad that I don't necessarily want to remember where I came from?

I have dreamed, since the seventh grade, about moving to a big city and making all my dreams come true.  I have wanted to live in a high rise, with a dog, a great job, and a rocking life.  I always said I would never get married, have kids, or live in a big house.  Some of my dreams have changed but for the most part they still remain the same.  I still find myself, almost daily, dreaming about my future and what could be.

Auburn has been a great place for me to be these last four years.  It was just far away enough from all the pain I felt towards Oxford and it was just a tad bigger.  Although, Oxford is probably the same size as Auburn is now.  Anyways, these past four years have gone by fast but I think that is just another way of saying it's time for a new chapter.  Each day I feel myself getting closer and closer to the dreams I've always had for my life.  I cannot wait to see what the future holds for me.

I want to make a disclaimer on this blog because I don't want anyone to feel unappreciated.  I greatly appreciate all the adults who have shaped my life.  Without them, I would still be lost and Auburn would not have been as fabulous as it is/was.  Also, I want my family to know that I do not blame them for any of my hatred to Oxford.  I brought it upon myself.  You all just got the unsatisfactory job of dealing with my stubborn/difficult self.  I want to thank you for having patience with me.  I have become a better person because of the patience you all had with me.

In closing, I do not think there is anything wrong with moving on.  I will never forget where I came from but I will always be looking forward to the next big thing.  However, I am truly scared that I will not make it in this big city dream of mine.  Please pray that I continue to grow and learn so that I will be able to live the life I've always dreamed of having.

God Bless,

Kayla

Childhood to Adulthood

Lately I've been thinking a lot about how everything in your life effects who you become.  The people you have spent your time with, the habits you created as a child, and the things you spend your time doing have all had an effect on how your personality is shaped, your values, and your physical self.

Being a 2-year-old seems like the perfect life.  Your parents took care of you, fed you, bathed you, and someone was always watching over you.  Every decision your parents made for you as child effected who you became today.  Stay at home mom, being an only child, the house structure you lived in all had an effect on your mind, body, and spirit.  How amazing.  I can't even recollect what my life was like for the first five years of my existence.

But as we get older and start to reflect on our childhood, you can see where something had a certain effect on you.  Being picked on in school probably made you have rejection problems or commitment issues.  Getting whatever you wanted as a young child made you demand things as an adult (and made you a huge brat).  Building relationships with other kids at a young age effected who you chose to be your friends today.  Most of these things are imbedded in us and rooted so deep that it is almost impossible to change who we truly are.  BUT we can better ourselves.  It takes work but it is possible.  You may always have the tendency to put people down to make yourself feel better but you can make a conscious effort to think about what you say to people before you throw them under the bus.

Another problem that really bothers me is over eating.  No one is obese because they want to be or because they love food that much.  Obesity is a disease and has a psychological meaning behind it.  Over eating can become an addiction and take over who you are.  Making fun of someone who is fat is not going to help their problem.  To help fight the disease you have to dig deep to find the real meaning behind eating that much food or that poorly of food.  I am a sucker for sweets and french fries but I make a conscious effort to limit myself and take care of it in the gym shortly after.  It is amazing to me how quickly pounds can add up if you do not do something about them.  Prime example is the Freshman 15.  Without work to keep the weight off, it is extremely easy to pack on the pounds because fast food is offered in the student centers and if there is free food at an event on campus I can promise you it won't be salmon and asparagus.  It will be a greasy pizza from Hungry Howie's because it's cheap and will feed a lot of people.  Making that conscious effort to take care of yourself will make you a happier person.  Fight through the addiction and do something for yourself.  If you are not obese be lucky you have everything in the right state of mind.  If you have come from obesity and are fighting the fight we all fight everyday, keep up the hard work.  I promise it pays off at the end of everyday you fight.

Make these decisions when you are younger or if you are a parent, soon to be parent, or college kid thinking about kids one day.  Know that every decision you make effects you or somebody else.  Don't be so over protective you can't experience life but realize that there is a reason things are in your life and they can shape you in many different ways.  Only you know who you are and what changed your life for the good or bad.  Make smart choices.  You only have one life to live and it is imperative you make the most of it.  Becoming an adult is a lot more informative than I would have ever thought (because I knew everything in high school [sarcastic voice]).  I learn something new about myself everyday.  I can see how the things that happened in my younger years effected everything I have and want today and in the future.  Continue reaching for the stars and developing yourself because it is intriguing to learn knew things about yourself and about life in general.

Dreaming big,

Kayla

The Past Year

It's been a long time since I last blogged.  I finished summer classes and have been working and traveling for the last couple of weeks.  I went home for Father's Day, had company in Auburn the next weekend and I went to Destin this weekend for the Fourth of July.

As I was in Destin, I began to reflect on how fast this year has gone by.  A year ago a few weeks ago my parents put my Dad's dog to sleep.  I remembered this this weekend because my Mom called my boyfriend to break the news to me because she knows how much I love animals that I wouldn't take the news lightly over the phone.  Also a year ago this weekend I lost someone who was a dear friend to me and my family, Dr. Lynch.  His family touched my life in so many ways and he had such an impact on who I was coming into college.  I still try to be the person he helped me be today but I find myself slipping back in to my old ways.  Dr. Lynch also encouraged me to run and finish what I always wanted to do.  With that motivation, I completed my first half-marathon this year and am currently training for my second one right now.  I was also reminded how fast this year has gone by when my boyfriend's mom asked me how long we had been together.  A year and a half in a week.  The time sure has flown.

Starting this blog has helped me grow as a person and remember all the feelings I've endured in these last few months.  I hope it continues to inspire people and maybe teach them something about themselves that maybe they did not realize until reading a blog post.  Lesson of this blog is to not take life for granted.  I have never realized how fast time flies until I reached college.  The last four years have been the best times of my life and they have certainly passed quicker than any other time in my life.  Live in the moment and do not live for the future or in the past.  Life is too short to take waste the precious time we have been given.

Living life to the fullest,

Kayla

My Past is My Past

I loved being a kid.  Elementary school could not have gotten any better.  Middle school was all fun and games and I met some great people.  High school was a different story as most of you already know.  It was the darkest time of my life at least the last year.  College I have redeemed myself and I am who I want to be.

Growing up has been (is) a great learning experience.  It is one of the reasons my blog is titled "Running Through Life".  I catch myself wishing my life away just to get to bigger and better things when in reality I should live in the present.  These past three years have been spectacular and I wouldn't trade anything for them in the world.

Going home, I realized how much things change.  Easter Sunday was a fabulous day to spend with family but the whole weekend consisted of seeing things/people from my past.  I believe things happen for a reason.  People are in your life for a reason and they make it to the future because that's where they are suppose to be.  Playing games with people in high school should not have been a way of life.  I and other people burned a lot of bridges that will NEVER be rebuilt.  Honestly, I could careless about those bridges being burnt because I see a bright and happy future ahead of me.

Keep your head held high if there is something that brings you down.  Don't let your past creep back up and bring you to that dark place.  Whether that be people, decisions you made, or barriers you broke through.  You can be as strong as you set your mind to be.  Believing in yourself and having the confidence to keep yourself going is how you will prevail! I believe in myself and the things/people that are in my life now.  I'm not looking back for one second because it will only hold me back.  Tear down everything that is holding you back and know that you can do anything you set your mind too! Get out there and make something of yourself.  Your past is in the past.  It may creep up every now and then but don't let it phase you.  Dream bigger, laugh more, and don't live in resentment, regret, and darkness.  It isn't going to do anything for you but waste your precious time here on this Earth!

Living life to the fullest,

Kayla

Diversity

Diversity seems to keep coming up in my life.  Being an Orientation Leader, we are trained to deal with diversity.  There is a session students are required to go to titled "Learning for Life".  When you see this on the schedule most students think it's a session for tips on how to survive in college (at least that's what I think); until you sit in on that session.  It is actually a session run by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.  In this session, everyone is asked to participate and the leader asks random questions about where everyone is from, what college they are transferring from, how many students did they graduate from, etc. and in that room alone there are so many different types of people and there are only 50+ people.  It's fascinating to see all the different responses.

Yesterday, I picked up my yearbook and turned through the first couple of pages.  In the yearbook, is a letter from the university's president addressing the topic of diversity.  Auburn is continuing to grow in diversity and is all the way to 17% which is not a lot compared to some universities but I consider it quite impressive.  In his letter, he states that every student should have the opportunity to travel abroad and study because it will help us grow and learn about different cultures.  Every college on Auburn's campus (100%) offers a study abroad program.  My college has a university in Italy especially for Human Science studies.  Very neat!

But why do we need to be more cultured?  Why is diversity so important? When I was younger, this topic didn't seem to be at the top of the list of things you must know.  Because the world is becoming so globalized, it is imperative students know how to communicate with different people.  I currently work in a very diverse atmosphere.  There are students I work with studying in the United States all the way from South Korea to learn and take back what they learned to their country.  Even though this is the United States of America we must be more willing to accept diversity.  Our country is not just Americans! An American could be almost anyone know a days.

People in the U.S. seem to shut people out if they aren't just like them.  Be open to different people.  I know this seems difficult but we do not live in the 1940's anymore.  We are becoming one world with thousands of different people.  Do not shut somebody out because they are greek and you are not, do not not listen to certain music because it is not your favorite kind of music, do not walk away from somebody because they are a different race.  We are all different in someone's eyes.  One person may seem normal to you while to somebody else they are looked at like a foreign object.  Let's become diverse and accepting of all people.  (I sound like a politician now: utilitarian. Ah!)

Learning to accept all people,

Kayla

Food for Thought: Focus

If anyone hasn't noticed yet in how sporadic my blogs are, I have very little focus.  I wouldn't consider myself to have ADD but it is extremely hard for me to focus on one thing for too long.

How much does focus impact your life?  It should impact your life in many ways.  How you focus during school/work, how you focus on important people in your life, and how you focus on every task that is given to you on a daily basis are all things that require a lot of focus.  In kindergarden, the only thing I failed was reading comprehension.  The lowest score on my ACT was the reading section.  The reason I have to sit in the front of my class with no electronics out is because I cannot focus on the teacher unless I put him/her in my focal point.

Focus has not only effected my school work, it has also effects relationships I have.  I get so caught up in what I'm doing that I forget to call a friend, talk to a friend when I pass them on campus, or don't pay full attention to stories they are telling me.  After every blog post I write, before I post it, I go back and re-read it to make sure it all flows.

My mind is always running wild and thinking about two different things (at minimum).  I consider this my multi task skills.  I use to be extremely great at multi-tasking but now a days I like to focus on one thing before I jump into another task that way I know I did it to the best of my ability.  When I run, a million thoughts run into my head.  When I get home and drink a glass of water I think to myself, what did I think about on my run today? Sometimes, I have burning thoughts so it's easy to remember but most of the time it's completely random thoughts and I can't remember a thing.

The reason I'm writing a blog about focus is because I think it's extremely important to focus your mind and your heart on the things you think are important.  Right now my focus is on SOS for tomorrow, school work, actual work, my family coming this weekend, and my running/eating healthy.  Find something you are passionate about and focus on it.  Don't let anyone tell you can't because if you have enough focus and determination you will accomplish anything you want.

Stay focused!

Food For Thought: Perfection

Hello devoted followers! :)

My next few blog post (in the next few days) are going to be titled Food For Thought.  The reason?  I hope to post during lunch time which is when I do most of my thinking because I normally have lunch alone.  Also, I've had a lot of thoughts on my mind lately that I cannot include in just one blog post.

This blog is about perfection.  I am a huge perfectionist.  Part of working in the hospitality industry means that nothing is perfect and things can always be altered.  One of the standard questions I've gotten in hospitality related interviews is "When you walk into a room, can you see things that need to be changed?" The correct answer: Yes.

Being perfect is impossible.  There was only one person to walk this Earth that was perfect and He will be the only one that will ever be.  Most people (especially girls, and especially myself) are EXTREMELY hard on themselves.  Examples: "I'm too fat." "I have too many wrinkles." "I will never be as pretty as you." Most of these things number one, probably aren't true you just see yourself in a different way than other people. Number two, most of them cannot be changed.  But the main point I want to get at is that NO ONE and I repeat NO ONE is perfect!

When asked to rate yourself on a 1-10 scale 10 being the highest, where would you rate yourself? In any category: personality, looks, work ethic, etc.  I, personally, could never ever give myself a 10 in any category because back to the golden rule of this blog: NO ONE is perfect.  There is always room for change. Being the person that I am and how hard I am on myself, that is probably not a good way to look at it.  But I just think it's practical.

Let me known, I, Kayla Preston, am far far FAR from perfect.  I upset a lot of people, I say the wrong things, I always think I'm right, I am rude sometimes, I always want my way.  Reevaluate yourself if you think you are perfect.  I'm not saying to put yourself down, but don't hold yourself so high that you think there is nothing you would change about yourself.  It's an important lesson to learn in this brutal world because you will always be knocked down another notch by something or someone.

Until Next Time,

Kayla

One Uppers

Why do people insist on putting you down by being a one upper?  Yeah, I guess it works, you get me down.  BUT more than anything, it is annoying.  No one wants to be friends with someone who always has something better to say.

A friend is someone who listens and helps you with your life.  I have learned a lot about that this semester and I'm still working on it A LOT! My listening skills (I hope) have improved but I can't stand to listen to people when the only thing they have to say to me is "I'm better than you." (of course in a more subtle way).

People are selfish.  I will be the first person to admit, I'm extremely selfish! I almost always talk about myself, what's going on in my life, what I want to do, what I think is best, and more and more about me me and me.  At least I realize it and I'm very very slowly starting to work on asking about other people's day's, lives, problems, and anything else they want to talk about.  But if you know I have a goal or a problem or have failed at something DO NOT rub it in my face that you did it better than me.  It's rude and it just makes me hate you more.

I am an extremely competitive person.  I find when I'm talking about myself that is most of the time when I'm unfortunately being a one upper.  So yes, this is a blog about something that drives me crazy but it's also something I do.  So, I want to take this time to apologize to anyone I may have put down, rubbed something in your face, made you feel less important, or just pretty much said "I'm better than you."  I am so sorry and I hope I can work on making my conversations more about the people I'm talking to rather than myself.

Sincerely,

Kayla

Career Choices

When you were a little kid people always asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"  My sister being the cute little kid she was would say, "I want to be a teenager!"  Since she has reached that career step, she now wants to be a teacher.  (More power to her!)  My Mom knew at the age of 16 she wanted to be an accountant (even though that meant skipping her birthday celebration every year).  For me, the answer was never clear.  I don't have a distinct time in my life that I remember saying any profession in particular.

Coming into college, my studies took me in the direction of nutrition which is something I'm very passionate about.  After a few struggles in those brutal science classes, I was urged to pick something else that would suit me better.  Personality tests revealed I needed to be in charge.  Really? I could have told you that with a home video of myself when I was four years old!  The counselor told me, "You're just like your mom, except you don't need to be stuck at a desk."  Okay, so where does that put me?  Active, manager, helping people, you got it.  Hotel & Restaurant Management.

Going into this major, I was filled with joy.  I finally found something that fits my personality.  Working in the industry has made me realize this is the right place for me except for the long hours.  I would consider myself a hard-worker but I also consider myself a big family and friends person.  Working long/late hours makes me concerned I won't see them as much.  I know there will always be a few crazy nights I'll be working while everyone else gets time off (holidays).  I just hope I can find something that suits me.

Finishing the last few weeks of my junior year, I have no idea where I'm going to end up in a year.  I have so many interest in life that I can't imagine having one job for the rest of my life.  I would love to be a Tweeting, blogging, fitness guru, restaurant/bar manager, sommelier, traveling, and planning events.  Surely I can find a job to fit that description, right? haha  Is there such a thing as getting cold feet about career choices? It seems like everyone around me knows exactly what they want to do with their life.  I know what I want out of life.  I just can't seem to get it all to fit into one.

Until Next Time,

Kayla

Manic Monday

Yesterday was a day.  That's all... just a day.  I procrastinated Sunday night so I could watch my shows and I would finish my homework before class on Monday.  I was casually eating breakfast in my kitchen on the bar and reading a passage for ethics that I had to answer questions on by 10am.  It's now 8:45am and I spill orange juice on the keypad of my MacBook. First thought, I'm going to have to buy a new computer.  Second, it's just orange juice how much damage could it do? I should have stuck with the first thought because that is exactly what I had to do.  I ran over to the AU Bookstore where we have an Apple Store (many students don't seem to know we have this amazing tool! Utilize it! We are one of two stores in the state of Alabama.) and talked to the tech guy and it was obvious I had fried the computer.  I went to class, made a phone call to my mother dearest and decided to buy a new laptop.  This world, well I should just say me, doesn't know how to function without a laptop!  I took notes the old school way with pen and paper and participated in class discussions.

After my first two classes, I headed back over to the bookstore where they scanned my credit card for a new MacBook Pro and I headed to the tech guys to move all my data over from my orange juiced computer to this sleek professional looking computer.  I told the guy not to touch it because it looked so fresh coming out of it's box. (haha) I went to my next class where I am planning The Hospitality Gala and it's only 10 days away (click on the blue to see the webpage).  It is crucial I have all my spreadsheets, Powerpoints, and word documents for this class and I'm unable to attain them because of my computer.  Oh well, it wasn't necessary for that class but I still need it to finish all the minor details for this event.  So after class I head back to the bookstore to pick up my laptop and go straight home to make sure everything is there and I'm able to access all my files.

I was suppose to have a meeting Monday afternoon to finalize a Powerpoint for the night of the event.  I click on the file and the programs won't open.  I need my product key from when I purchased it in December.  Okay, easy.  I'll go get the license from my filing cabinet and type it in... The CD (product key) is no where to be found.  I tear my filing cabinet apart trying to find that stupid black sleeve and never do.  So I call the bookstore hoping to get some help, "Well, if you can't find it by in the morning come by and we'll put in the product key for you."  So much for that meeting.  Post-poned.  I decide I've looked far and wide and it is no where to be find, I'll just wait until the morning.

I go to the bookstore this morning (Tuesday) and tell them I couldn't find it.  "Oh, we only have the 2008 version and you have the 2011 version.  Sorry. Call Microsoft and they should help you. IF you need proof of purchase, just come back."  I'm thinking to myself, I have spent so much money and time here in the past 24 hours and you are telling me to come back WHEN they need proof of purchase. UGH, fine.  So I go to a meeting, go to class, grab Chickfila (because it's irresistible), and call Microsoft.  After a 15 minute conversation, oh you've called the wrong line.  You have a Mac so you need to call Macafee. Maca-what? Okay, fine.  I call them, automated phone conversation.  Oh how those make me so mad! "Press 1 to be connected to blah, Press 2 to be connected to blah!" I finally get a lady on the phone and we have a 20 minute conversation, she takes all my information, and NOW she can transfer me to customer service.  Well thanks.  (and of course I can't understand a word any of these people I've talked to on the phone so far are saying)  I get this lady on the phone who can't do anything for me because she has to have her supervisor email me within the next 24 hours.  Well that doesn't help.  I needed these files accessed yesterday!! Oh and they need proof of purchase.  I go back to the bookstore to obtain my proof of purchase and I wait and wait and wait until 45 minutes pass and they can't find my receipt of when I purchased it.  By this time, I'm about ready to just buy a new program and install it.  BUT of course when it comes down to the crunch they always have something up their sleeves they just want to see you waste your whole afternoon before they do something for you.  10 minutes later, Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Outlook are all working on my computer no problem!

So needless to say, the past 24 hours have been a heck of a time coming back from Spring Break.  BUT the day gets better.  No really, it does. :) I finally get home after running around campus and check my email.  I have an email I've been waiting for for a week now.  I have been accepted to go on a trip of a lifetime to Napa Valley, CA for the Hotel & Restaurant Management program all expenses paid to study wine and wineries for 9 days in May.  I will have the privilege to meet famous chefs, wine makers, and go on private tours through wineries.  AH! While this trip sounds so relaxing and fun, it is a study tour.  It is considered a class and I will be extremely busy in those 9 days.  I could not be more excited about how much this trip will benefit me in the long run for jobs, sommelier classes (wine masters), and learning more about the art of pair food with wine.  So to end these hectic 36 hours, I will be sipping red wine, watching the Biggest Loser and cooking a fabulous dinner for myself to unwind and be thankful for all the things I have in my life.

Until next time,

Kayla

Experience of a Lifetime

Last week could not have been a better week for me.  I needed to get away from life so bad.  I do not know what I'm going to do after graduation with a real job and no time to escape to the beach.  Earn my right to take vacation I guess.. haha

Spring Break started out in Destin, FL from Friday-Thursday.  I got to relax on the beach with perfect March weather and get a great tan for the gala coming up.  While I was at the beach, I had seafood, shopped at the outlets, and trained for my half-marathon.  Only one day was the training absolutely awful (10 miles at the beach on a Saturday, blah!).  But I did it and could not believe I actually finished 10 miles.  I got a little nervous though during the week because my left knee started to give me serious pain up my thigh and around my knee cap.  I only completed 5 of the 6 miles I was suppose to do on Tuesday but felt like it if wasn't for my knee, I could have easily completed the 6 miles.  The rest of the week was easy training and I was able to rest my knee (a little) to make it through the race on Sunday.

The last weekend of Spring Break I was in Atlanta, GA preparing myself for an event I never thought I would actually partake in: a half-marathon.  I was able to spend time with B's family, have a fabulous pasta dinner prepared by B, and completely destroy my March Madness bracket.  It was a great weekend and couldn't have been a better way to end Spring Break.

Sunday, the day of the race.  I woke up at 4:30 AM EST!!!! Take note: that is 3:30AM CST!!  I was so anxious to get the race started I just could not sleep.  I registered on Friday at the Georgia Dome where Publix had the entire football field covered with booths of health people, fitness guru's, clothes, shoes, food, physical therapist, and huge registration tables lined all the way down the visitors side.  I have never been to a health expo so I looked like a lost puppy walking through that huge mess.  I registered and received my bag with my shirt and bib in it.  I kept telling B, "I'm way out of my league.  These people are serious." He reassured me probably 50 times that my training will pay off and that no one will be looking at me because they will be worried about themselves.  Thank goodness he was right.

I could not have prepared myself for the amount of people that were at this race! It was an experience like no other!!! I completed my race in 2.27.31.  It took me three minutes to get to the starting line though (I already docked it off my time, hehe) so I was extremely proud of beating my goal.  B told me when I finished the first full marathoner finished 3 minutes before I did!! I couldn't believe him!

The whole race was fantastic.  I was able to run through my dream city, through 4 universities, and over a bridge that crossed over 75/85S and look over and see the beautiful sky line as the sun was just rising.  It was magnificent.  I went through every emotion a human could go through during that race.  When I first started I wanted to cry because I was soo scared of all the intimidating runners, with their serious waist bands, serious outfits, and energy drinks attached to them.  I had never seen anything like it and felt completely out of place with plain Nike shorts on, an Underarmor workout shirt, and an Auburn hat.  The first few miles were calming.  I was able to look around enjoy my surroundings and not believe myself that I was seriously about to run 13.1 miles.  About half way through I was angry.  I didn't know why my knee was hurting so bad, I wanted it to pop or something so it would fix itself, and I wanted somebody to be on the sidewalk holding a poster that said my name on it.  At about 8 miles, my anger was quickly gone, I began to think about the reason I came to run this race: Steve.  I was so excited he was running with me and that he had gotten me through the hills, the people, and out there to actually finish the race.  Mile 11, I could not believe my time, right around 2.00.00.  I was going to finish this race before my goal.  Well, thanks to a big hill I walked up the hill and ran the entire last mile because I was finishing that race at a run!   I got to the 13 mile mark and saw B.  He took pictures and ran with me on the sidewalk to the finish line! I had completed my first half-marathon.  The whole race I just kept thinking, PLEASE don't let me be the last one to cross the line.  So many people passed me and I just knew I was close to the end.  B told me I probably finished in the 40% which made me feel sooo great.

Without the support of everyone in my life, I could have never of finished that race.  I didn't want to let anyone down.  I had made it that far that my body would not let me quit.  Thank you for all your support in following me on this journey.  You all pushed me through it!! But to the person who pushed me to get out there and accomplish it, Steve.  No of this could have been done without him.  I am so happy he asked me every week how I was doing with my running.  Even if I didn't completely it while he was here on Earth, he was running with my Sunday in heaven right beside me carrying me through.

I want to encourage anyone out there who is afraid of doing something to get out there and do it.  Go out of your comfort zone and do something you've always wanted to do but never in your wildest dreams pictured yourself doing.  If you need some help getting to that goal, I will help you.  The feeling of accomplishing something for yourself is so rewarding.  Take the time to do something for yourself.  Don't be afraid of the unknown.  It will be well worth it once you embark on some new territory.

Have the courage to endure,

Kayla

Don't Judge a Book by its' Cover

How many times have you heard the saying "Don't judge a book by its' cover!"? Too many times to count, right? Me too! It always seemed so silly growing up.  I always took it literally.  If I read a book for Accelerated Reader (AR) it had to have a cool cover.  I was not going to read it without pictures or a colorful background.  Then came 5th grade and Harry Potter had zero pictures and a dark cover.

It's just like growing up and having the true meaning behind the saying.  When you are younger the only people you judge are strangers you don't know and that's because your parents told you not to talk to strangers.  Children are open to anybody until they become a middle schooler and everyone is there enemy (the dark cover).  You have that one best friend who would get you through your first crush and your first bully.  Then, when you get older you've collected a lot of books over time, some are picture books, some are classics (your family), some are adventures (your friends), and some are romantics (someone special).  Everything outside of your collection comes to you as a new cover something you've never seen before.  Do you dare to start a conversation and figure out what this "book" is about? Maybe, but most of the time you only take people by what they present to us: the table of contents.

Can we really get to know someone by the table of contents?  A table of contents will give you a wide variety of ways to interpret a story.  Someone's character is what they do when no one is watching.  How can you get to know a character if you don't read the book? You can't.  Sure you can read summaries but that isn't going to give you a clear understanding of what that character really is and what they do for the book.

This blog probably seems a little confusing because I keep referring to people being books and books being people.  What I'm trying to get across is we don't know anyone until we have actually gotten to know them.  By saying, you know that person but you've only seen what they do around you doesn't necessarily mean you know them.  People are very interesting creatures.  I'm the worse when it comes to people watching.  I try not to judge anyone by what they are doing but watching people's actions seems to make us think we know everything about them.  Make sure when you start talking about someone you actually know them instead of just talking about what you've seen them do.  There is nothing worse than being accused of something you aren't.  I was my whole high school career and made it a point to let everyone get to know me as much as possible while I am in college so they won't assume wrongly of me.  Don't be afraid to embark in new relationships with people.  It is the most interesting thing in the world to start a conversation with someone you do not know and get to know more about what goes on in their lives.  That's why I like reality TV so much.  I get to see a little of who they are but the fault in it is we don't really know who they are because we don't ever get to talk to them.

Keep your book open.  Don't be a reader, be a learner.

Appreciation

I have been so busy this last week and I'm only getting busier until the end of March.  Last week was a great week.  Full of activities, reaching goals, getting exciting news and getting to go home and see my family.  One thing that kept reoccurring in my head was the word appreciation.

I feel I am always thankful for the things I have in my life but I don't really take the time to appreciate everything.  I know you are probably thinking that being thankful and being appreciative are the same things.  Well, in a sense they are but to me they mean something a little different.  Being thankful is so easy to do.  People get in a routine of always saying thank you for things that happen or come there way.  But being appreciative is actually thinking about what you are saying thank you for.

Last week, I had the opportunity to interview to become a College of Human Science Ambassador and I got the position! :) I was so excited because it is something I'm so passionate about.  I get to tell other students how great and awesome my college is and how no other college on campus can surpass mine because it is so amazing.  Also last week, I found out I have the opportunity to apply for the California Study Tour.  The name alone sounds fun, right?  Well let me tell you a little more.  The California Study Tour is a "class" in my major that allows 15 students to travel to Napa Valley, CA with the head of our department, general manager at the hotel I work at and meet wine makers, famous chefs, visit vineyards, and learn more and more about food and beverage in the most exquisite places in the United States!  It is normally only open to seniors but they didn't have enough interview so they proceeded to open it up to juniors and I was so excited to apply.  The reason I was so excited because I won't have another opportunity because I'm hoping by May next year I will have a job lined up for after graduation.  This trip takes place in May right after final exams so it counts as a summer credit hour.  Anyways,  I don't know when I'll hear back from them but I'm hoping soon.

This weekend, I was able to finally go home and see my parents/family.  I've been so busy with school and work on the weekends I haven't had time to escape and just enough the company of family.  I take my parents for granted.  They are way too great to me and give me everything I could ever hope and dream for.  Being home made me appreciate everything my parents have given me in life.  Without them I wouldn't be living this amazing life I have right now.  Without them I could never have put myself out there enough to try out for things, train for a half-marathon, and be the person I am today.  They have been such a great example for me growing up and even more so today.  As a high schooler, I never would have said these words, I was out to prove my parents wrong.  And like my Papa always said "One day you'll realize how smart your parents really are."  The older I get the more I realize how smart, driven, amazing, and special they are to me.  I hope I can make them proud by being half the parents they are to my siblings and me.

In conclusion,  I became so appreciative of all the opportunities I have in my life that I don't want to waste a single second of my life being mad at someone who means something to me, not taking full advantage of every opportunity open to me, and not being completely myself.  I always strive for the best in myself but I am just living life to the fullest right now and not taking anything for granted.

Stay appreciative,

Kayla

Interviews

Is it weird that I love interviews? Probably, because most people stress over them to the extend of perspiring through their suits.  When I first came to Auburn interviewing was my weakest point.  I couldn't get through an interview without making a complete fool of myself.  Now, interviewing is like meeting new people.  Talking about yourself and your interests, it's one of the easiest things people can talk about.

I have always had a job.  Since before it was legal and as soon as I turned sixteen I got my first "real" job.  I didn't interview much in my small town but once I came to college it seems that interviewing is a monthly activity.  Interviewing for organizations, for work, and for friends.  Interviewing became one of those things you just weren't going to be good at unless you practiced, practiced, practiced.  I have interviewed so much in the past year that interviewing after college should hopefully be a little easier.  I know those interviews are a lot more stressful because you have a full-time job at risk but hopefully with all this practice I'll be able to put my best self forward.

In the next couple of weeks, I will hopefully be interviewing for a leadership position at the hotel.  It is an hour and a half interview of questions solely on leadership and what it entails.  Phone interviews are great because as long as you are smiling as you talk you don't have the intimidation of someone writing down every answer you say right in front of you.  Some of the best I advice I ever got for interviewing was to smile through your voice, be yourself, and don't be afraid to pause.  It's better to pause than say "um" or "like".

Go ahead and prepare yourself for some always asked questions.  Never fails, every interview I can remember doing has asked: 1. What are your strengths? 2. What are your weaknesses? 3. Tell us about yourself and 4. Do you have any questions?  That last question is more important than you think.  That in itself is asking "Are you really interested in this company?" With a quick answer of "no" that quickly sends your information to the trash can.  Even if I think I know everything I could know about the position I am applying for I find something to ask.  Reiterate what they have already asked you and make sure you have the right information about it or ask when you might expect to hear back from them.  It's always nice to know that after 30 minutes of hearing your ramble on and on about yourself they have the same opportunity to tell you even more about themselves or the company/organization they are affiliated with.

This blog probably means nothing to anybody reading this but I had some free time and writing is a way of relaxation.  I don't get much time to just write so thanks for letting me talk about absolutely nothing meaningful today.

Happy Interviewing!

Be There

Before I get to studying my life away, I just wanted to post some thoughts that have been rolling through my head all last week.

Two words: Be there.

In SOS, we have four "FISH" philosophy's  we are suppose to implement in our orientation sessions.  Well I must say, they need to be applied in our everyday lives as well.  The four philosophy's are: Play, Make Their Day, Choose Your Attitude, and Be There.  We have had exercises on all of them but last week we did activities related to Be There and they really stuck with me throughout the week.

Being there for someone is so much more than physically being there.  We have to be there mentally as well.  Someone mentioned in SOS "Being There" reminded them of the theme song of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. That show was my Mom's favorite and I grew up watching and listening to that song all the time and really had no idea what the words of the song were.  As I've grown up and actually learned the words to the song it really is a fantastic theme song for that show and our lives.  We cannot just be independent and hope to get through this world.  It's brutal out there.  Knowing that there is someone in your lives day to day that cares about you, supports you, wants to know all about your day, and will be there with you through the thick and thin is so comforting.  Being there can mean sending them a note, calling them, asking how their day has been and really listening to what they have to say, giving a compliment, sharing something in common, or spending your precious time with someone who may need it more than you do.

This week was my second week of training.  I hit some major goals and could not have done it with out the support of my friends, family, and all you guys who have read this blog, commented on my status', and texted/called me with encouraging words.  I have never ran 7 miles together in my entire life.  I couldn't believe I made it through with out stopping and only three blisters (haha).  I also completed my miles in 10 minutes which has been my goal throughout training. I want to finish the half-marathon in 2.10.00.  I know that's a high goal to shoot for so I'm thinking of raising it to 2.30.00.  That way I won't be completed disappointed when I get no where close to 2.10.00.  This coming week I am going to hit some more major milestones in my training.  I hope to go home on Saturday and my run that day consists of 8 miles! Hopefully I can find some where in my 5-mile span of a town to run 8 (haha, joking about the 5-mile town).

In conclusion,  I have realized this week that I give up on people when they don't give 100% or at least I don't think they do.  I am hoping to turn this around.  I can be there for someone when they need someone the most, even if they think they can go through the world with as little people as possible.  I am still going to be there.  This blog has taught me a lot.  The people that have read my blogs have been so encouraging to me and I just hope that this cyberspace thing is as encouraging to them/y'all.  Have a fantastic week and make sure you "Be There" for someone this week to help them with whatever may be going on in their lives even if you have no idea what that something may be.

Expectations

Good-morning blog readers! Today is the 10th of February and it's my boyfriend's 21st - FINALLY! :D

Today was my fourth day of training.  Running is the best therapy!  I think about anything and everything on my runs.  Today was only three miles but when you get on a runners high you lose track of time, distance, and your location.  I also didn't go to bed until three a.m. last night so I did a lot of thinking then as well.

I did the worst thing a girlfriend can do on their boyfriends birthday.  I fell asleep and didn't call at midnight. :/ That could be a reason I was up until three because I got a quick power nap in until I woke up around 12:34 and realized I had missed it.  I know to some people that's not a big deal because you would rather be asleep at midnight on your birthday but 1. It was his 21st and 2. I would have been so irate if I didn't get my midnight call.  So I began to think about expectations.  Everyone sets expectations.  Whether it be for yourself, of other people, of situations, or just in general how your day is going to go.  When those expectations aren't met you get disappointed.  Disappointed.  I hate that word.  It's worse than angry or mad.  The one phrase a kid (should) never want to hear from their parents is "I'm not mad.  I'm just disappointed." Man did I get that phrase a lot in high school.  Anyways, disappointment is one of those things that is completely preventable.  Yes, you might slip up or make bad decisions but in the end it's on you that you disappointed someone.  Anger and being mad comes from intentionally doing something to piss someone off.  I guess being the rebel of the family anger and being mad didn't effect me as much as disappointment.

When you have expectations of other people and they don't meet them, politely tell them what's wrong.  It's better to know than to just be sit there wondering what did I do wrong.  If you want something done your way you have to tell people.  I guess that's why I always seem to get my way.  I state my opinion way too often.  I have a tendency to place a lot of expectation on myself.  Well and on other people as well.  I only expect the best out of myself and nothing less.  I give 100% all the time and if I'm exhausted at the end of the day, so be it.  I gave it my all.  That's where I have a problem.  The expectations I have of myself, I expect everyone else to be on the same page as me.  That's why I do not work well in groups.  If there is a lot of work to be done, I tend to put it on myself because I don't know if everyone will pull their weight to make things happen.  I know this is annoying and people tend to dislike me after group projects because they feel like they didn't get a say in things.  I'm working hard on a project for one of my classes now and I feel exactly like this.  I enjoy doing the work but it's not far to everyone else who wants to do something.  But on the flip side, slackers just make me mad.  If you don't want to put in the same amount of effort as everyone else in the group, get out.  I don't need my work to be anything less than 100%.

I guess realizing my faults is making me mature as a women.  I believe everyone has something they can work on.  I just think my list is a little longer than everyone else's because I put so much expectation on myself to be/do everything.  I don't think that this expectations are faults but maybe that much pressure is a bad thing.  In conclusion, it's okay to have expectations of people.  If you get disappointed, try and talk/work it out.  Don't just sit there with it on your mind.  It will only eat at you and make you disgusted in that other person.  Also, know that other people are capable of meeting your expectations.  When I say (type) these things I'm doing so for myself as well as whoever it may help/inspire.  These are reminders for me to know that I'm allowed to share work loads and I'm allowed to not be 100% perfect all the time (because I'm far from it).  People are unique individuals and everyone is completely different.  Make sure you take that into consideration when you set your expectations.  Live and learn and make mistakes.  It's what develops you as a person.

Respect yourself and other people,
Kayla

Set in My Old Ways

Humans are all creatures of habit.  I am especially.  I have been bitting my nails since I was in the second or third grade and had to wear fake nails for a year just so I would stop bitting them.  I'm a week strong so let's hope I will stop this disgusting habit.

Habits.  How do we break them? Are all habits bad? My habits seem to always be bad.  I have come to a realization that I'm not as good of a person as I believe myself to be.  I do the right things or so I think but I have some nasty habits that have to be broken.  I have the biggest attitude anyone could imagine.  I have always had an attitude, for as long as I can remember.  My parents have home videos of me acting like a complete brat.  In high school, I thought it was hilarious to show them, and now I'm so embarrassed by the way I acted and still do to some extent.  I always have to be right.  This might come with the attitude and that I'm a female but for some reason I cannot STAND to be wrong.  I always think my ideas are better than everyone else's, I always think the "facts" I state are right and most of the time they are completely off, and I absolutely hate to be beaten.  I also have a tendency to pitch a fit when I don't get my way.  So childish I know, but that's how bad I have to be right.  Lastly, I put people down for my own pleasure.  I hate admitting this because I feel I am such a people person and always try to make other people happy.  This flaw has slowly started to get better but I'm still hurting the people I love most.

So how do I change this stuff? Most of these things have been habits since I was four years old.  These problems are not good.  It is not very grown up of me to be acting in these manners.  I am completely disgusted with myself because I have found myself being completely selfish.  I have been doing some deep soul searching this weekend and still can't find a way to make all these things better.  I hope it changes soon and I will continue to pray that it does.  I don't want to be this way anymore.  It's time to be an adult and handle problems in adult ways.

Searching for answers,

Kayla

Put on Your Happy Face

Hello everyone... I hope this finds you in good spirits.  For the last week, I have been extremely motivated, happy, and just enjoying life staying as busy as possible.  BUT do you ever get to those times in your life where motivation is hard to come by, happiness is still there you just aren't as bubbly as you normally are, and the craziness just wears you down?  Well, I am there.  School just started back but I can feel this semester going by faster than the last one.

I feel like I am a pretty open person.  I post status' frequently, my Twitter gets updated every time something crosses my mind, I write blogs about my whole life, and I'm pretty active.  But I don't feel like I've shared the negative parts about me.  A quality I believe I have recently acquired is putting on my happy face.  My biggest pet peeve is negative people.  So this leads me to believe I haven't been telling you everything that goes on.  People who say every thing gets on their nerves and anything/every thing you do for them will never be good enough to make them happy, drive me crazy.  So I try to stay away from all the negative energy.  But sometimes it may be good to know that not everything I do is as strong as it appears.

This weekend has worn me down.  My happy face has become a "no teeth" smile (which is never me). My drive to always please people is still there but my drive to do things for myself is just not.  I have got to get myself back to the positive me because I've got a full week ahead of me.  I know I can do it because God never puts too much on my plate for me to handle.  I believe in myself and getting back to that stage very soon.

The reason I am writing this blog is to let you all know that not everyone is always happy, motivated, and driven to do things.  You will have those off days.  Just try not to make it a constant emotion for yourself, it's annoying.  And to conclude, I'm writing this blog to remind myself how annoying being down really is.  This is my wake up call to get motivated again and smile at everything (with teeth) because there is no reason to be a sour puss!  I hope this can get your week started right.  Know that it is okay to be out of whack a few days but once you find yourself becoming the "Negative Nancy", find a way to change your attitude for the better because like my Momma always told me... "Attitude is EVERYTHING!"

Best Regards,

Kayla

Friends

Friends will come and go but your true friends will always be there for you.

College has been an amazing experience for me and it still isn't over.  I didn't have many "true" friends in high school.  There were a few that were always there for me in my lowest times and can I just say high school had some of the lowest times of my life.  But most of those friends were either younger or older so my senior year was a very lonely year for me.  I waited for months and months to finally get the letter saying I would be attending Auburn University.  When that letter finally came, all I could think about was getting out of that awful town and moving.  I knew that once I came to Auburn my whole life would change and man did it change.  My first week at Auburn I got into a minor car wreck.  It was pouring down rain and I had NO ONE to call but my mother who couldn't do anything for me two hours away.  Thankfully, a few days later, I met a girl who changed my life and made me realize what a true friend was.  Soon after that, I met six more girls that formed my support system.

These girls mean the world to me and without them I wouldn't be where I am today.  We have been through some troubled times, we have been through some silent periods, but no matter how bad things got or how long we had been without talking we picked right back up where we left off of being best friends.

I write this short little blog to say that you cannot get through life without friends.  You may think it's hard to find friends.  You may think that you don't have any true friends.  But if you ever have a problem and you call that person you think "isn't a friend" and they are there for you in the waiting room of a hospital because you have flipped your car and your parents are driving two hours to make sure you are alive...  That is a true friend.  That is who will always be with you no matter what.  Through all the guys you will cry your eyes out over, for all the not so true friends stabbing you in the back, and for all those happy times, like a 21st birthday.  They will never disappoint.  Count your blessings.  Most people aren't even blessed enough to even have one true friend and I can say I have eleven girls who will always be there for me.
